Devils fall to Broncos, 2-1, in regional game

The Mathews High School varsity soccer season came to an end as the Devils came up short against the Franklin Broncos last Wednesday in the first round of regional play, 2-1.

The teams were battling for the right to advance to the Region 1A quarterfinal game against the top-seeded Rappahannock Raiders.

The game started slowly, with both teams feeling the effect of the heat. Franklin seemed to have control of possession from the opening kick, scoring the game’s first goal, as a bad bounce on the Devils’ defensive end resulted in an open lane to the goal.

Not long after, Franklin managed to put another shot into the back of the net, this time off a header inside the box. With only minutes remaining in the first half, Sawyer Hutson finally broke the ice for the Blue Devils off a through pass from Jaysen Hall.
