Devils fall to 0-4 after loss to Essex

The Mathews High School varsity football team slipped to 0-4 on the season with a 55-6 loss at home to Essex.

The Devils did give the visiting Trojans a bit of a game in the first half, holding the visitors to 14 points. “I believed we surprised them with a game plan and a fight they weren’t prepared for in the first half,” MHS head coach Ryan Wenner said. “Holding them to 14 points, and were it not for a dropped interception and a penalty calling back a big play, it may have been 7-7.”

But the Trojans’ speed was too much to keep up with as the game wore on. “We were down to mostly second- and third-string (players) at key positions for much of the game due to illnesses, which didn’t help,” Wenner said. The Devils did show heart and fight against a top-ranked opponent (#2 in the state) “which we, as coaches, are proud of,” Wenner said.
