Devils fall to 0-2 following loss to Eagles

The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 0-2 on the season following a 61-6 loss last Thursday night against the visiting Washington and Lee Eagles.

The Blue Devils’ only points came in the first quarter. On the kickoff following the Eagles’ first touchdown, Jarius Monroe returned the ball 87 yards for the score. This was Monroe’s second kick return for a touchdown, having also scored in the Aug. 25 season opener against Northampton.

The touchdown cut the Eagles’ lead to 7-6, but that was as close as Mathews would get in the game. By halftime, Washington and Lee held a commanding 48-6 lead.

Other offensive leaders for Mathews included quarterback Chance Spencer, who had 12 passing yards, with wide receiver Justin Ashberry getting 12 receiving yards.
