Devils fall in season opener to Yellow Jackets

The Mathews High School varsity football team opened its 2017 season on the Eastern Shore on Friday night, falling to the Northampton Yellow Jackets by a 49-18 margin.

Mathews will hold its home opener tonight, when the squad hosts the Washington and Lee Eagles. The game begins at 7 o’clock at Ken Brown Field.

For the Devils’ offensive performance, quarterback Jovan Johnson started the scoring for Mathews with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, but fumbled in the end zone and the ball was recovered by one of the Blue Devils’ starting linemen, Michael Pennington, so the touchdown was still good. Johnson had 65 total rushing yards. Running back Jarius Monroe scored a 65-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter. Monroe ended the day with a total of 86 rushing yards. Johnson scored the Devils’ third touchdown on an 80-yard run while on kick return duties in the second quarter.
