Devils drop two, then top Middlesex and Carver

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team went 2-2 in recent action, suffering losses to King William and West Point before bouncing back to defeat Middlesex and Carver Academy.

Mathews traveled to King William on Jan. 21, falling to the Cavaliers, 79-64. 

The Devils had previously beat King William, 55-51. The Cavaliers were ready this time, and sharpshooting was their key. They hit double digit threes in the first half, making it difficult for the Devils to climb out of the halftime hole.

A quick press allowed for the Devils to sneak back into it, closing the lead to eight at one point, but a quick transition press by the Cavaliers proved to be too much for the Devils to handle. The leaders on the night for the Devils were Stuart Anderson with 23 points and Reggie Johnson with 11.

The following Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Devils hosted conference rival West Point. Mathews had also previously defeated the Pointers away, 80-53, and looked to do the same this time. ...
