Devils drop two, pick up conference win

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team hosted the highly acclaimed Middlesex Chargers on Friday night. The Devils started off strong, trailing by seven at the end of the first half. However, Mathews lost momentum as the Chargers eventually pulled away, dropping the game, 55-40.

Cody Kelly led the Blue Devils in scoring, putting up 20 points, while Zach Jarosz and Owen Cullison each contributed six.

On Monday night, the Devils traveled to Rappahannock for a non-conference matchup. The Devils were flat and the lack of any offensive spark proved to be the difference in the game, as Mathews fell to the hosts, 73-54. The leading scorer for MHS was Cody Kelly, who had 29 points. In this game, Kelly broke the historic 1,000-point mark for his four-year varsity career. He will be honored at MHS before the start of the Feb. 13 West Point varsity game.
