Devils drop thriller, ready for tournament

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team closed the books on the 2014-2015 regular season Friday with a classic showdown with Conference 42 foe West Point. Unfortunately, the Devils dropped the thriller, 54-51.

The game was hyped from the start, as the Mathews fan section lit up the gym. The Devils took control at the opening tipoff, posting a double-digit lead for much of the first half. However, due to some Devil foul trouble, the Pointers went into halftime only down by six.

The second half was one for the books. The Pointers stayed in the game, and maintained a small rally to tie the game with less than two minutes to go. The teams traded baskets, and the Pointers had possession with less than 20 seconds to go. A last second three by the Pointers proved to be the difference in the game.
