Devils dominate district cross country meet

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams destroyed their competition at the Tidewater District Championship meet, which was held last Wednesday at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg.

The girls won with 24 points against King William (62), Middlesex (66) and West Point (79). The boys also won the event, with 28 team points, against runners from King William (59), Middlesex (71) and West Point (81). Nancy Barnhardt finished first overall for the Lady Devils while Kyle Slaughter finished second overall for the MHS boys.

Barnhardt came from behind halfway through the race, demonstrating will and determination to finish 46 seconds ahead of the closest competition with a time of 22:01. She helped win the district title for her team and the MVP award for herself.
