Devils crush Trojans, 18-4

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team posted a 18-4 win Friday over the homestanding Essex Trojans. Mathews also picked up a forfeit win against Charles City on Monday, putting the Blue Devils’ season record at 6-3.

Tyler Moore started off the Essex game with a single to right field, which set the tone for the Devils’ offense. Ethan Armistead drew a walk and Moore and Armistead worked their way into scoring position; both scored on a ground ball to short by Jalen Matthews. MHS strung two more hits together to scratch across one more in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Starting on the hill for Mathews was Christian Williams. Essex scored one run in the bottom of the first following a walk. Going into the top of the third, Mathews trailed, 4-3, but that’s when the Devils charged back and plated four runs of their own, jumping out to a 7-4 lead.
