The Mathews High School softball team recaptured the Tidewater District tournament on Friday night with an 18-0 win over King William.
After winning the district’s regular season and tournament titles, Mathews has its sights set on the next level, with the Lady Devils hosting the opening round of the Region A tournament last night.
Mathews was scheduled to face #4 seed Essex at 6 o’clock yesterday in the semifinals. If the Devils win, they will host either Nandua or Windsor on Friday for the Region A title.
In Friday’s district championship game, the stakes were high for both teams—Mathews wanted to clinch the #1 seed in the region, while King William needed a win to get a bid in the Region A tournament.
With a spirited team and crowd, the Lady Cavs’ leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch to reach first base; however, pitcher Lindsay Crigler struck the next two out and threw the third girl out at first base.
