Devils blow out Panthers, 57-20

The Mathews High School football team picked up its second win of the season on Friday night, blowing out the host Charles City Panthers by a 57-20 margin.

The game started out with a familiar pattern for the Blue Devils. Early in the second quarter, Mathews found itself trailing, 12-7. But that’s where Mathews flipped the script, as the Devils came back to score 45 unanswered points on the way to a one-sided victory.

“This win was huge for us,” MHS head coach C.J. Kelly said. “We wanted to have an offensive breakthrough this game and we did just that. Middlesex is coming up this week and we are looking forward to that game. They got us the first game and that is in the back of all of our minds. We want to keep everyone focused and move forward to the new week.”

MHS running back Jovan Johnson gained 163 yards on nine carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 75 yards, 27 yards and 10 yards.
