Devils blanked by Pointers, 49-0

The Mathews High School varsity football team dropped to 1-7 overall after suffering its first shutout loss of the season on Friday to the visiting West Point Pointers, 49-0.

"We just panicked," MHS head coach Ryan Wenner said, as his team committed numerous mistakes in the lopsided loss. "We’d have one great play and then five bad ones," he said.

The Devils will look to get back into the win column this Friday when they host Charles City (also 1-7) in a Division 1A Conference 42 matchup. Game time is 7 p.m.

Mathews ends its season the following Friday, Nov. 8 against the visiting Middlesex Chargers.
