Devils beat Yellow Jackets 14-8 in season opener

The Mathews High School varsity football team kicked off the season the right way on Friday. The Blue Devils traveled to Eastville and returned from the Eastern Shore with a 14-8 win against the Northampton Yellow Jackets.

All of the scoring took place in the first half. Mathews was led by Thurman Hudgins, the starting quarterback, with all completed passes in the game. Reggie Johnson had an interception and ran the ball 42 yards in one play and was unstoppable.

Jalen Matthews also picked off an errant Yellow Jacket pass late in the game to secure the victory. Hunter Scales recorded a QB sack. Hudgins scored the first touchdown of the game on a quarterback keeper. Elijah Willis caught a pass from Thurman in the end zone for the other Blue Devil score. Tim White kicked both extra points for Mathews. The boys have been practicing very hard every day and it has begun to pay off, with the help of head coach Ryan Wenner and his staff.
