Devils beat Raiders, Panthers in soccer

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team earned a pair of road victories during the past week, topping Rappahannock 2-1 last Wednesday and picking up an easy 11-0 victory over an inexperienced Charles City squad on Monday.

The JV Devils, meanwhile, were shut out by the Rappahannock Raiders last Wednesday, 3-0.

The first time around, the varsity Devils beat the Raiders by the skin of their teeth. This time coach Jacob Ryan was hoping for a decisive victory. 

Throughout the first half, it was clear Mathews was easily overpowering the Raiders’ defense, having multiple shots on goal. At 15 minutes left in the first half, Kevin Jenkins scored the first Blue Devil goal assisted by Mark Wilson. But then, the Raiders were able to score a lucky goal against Jacob Maggioncalda. The first half was exciting and well matched as both teams rocked-and-socked for the ball.
