Devils beat Raiders 2-1 in regular season opener

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team scored a win on Monday in the opening game of the 2016 regular season, beating the visiting Rappahannock Raiders by a 2-1 margin.

The Blue Devils started the game with multiple shots on Rappahannock’s goal and had a strong defensive show, keeping the Rappahannock varsity team from scoring for much of the first half.  With two minutes left in the half, Rappahannock was able to squeeze a ball past goalie Jacob Maggioncalda and scored, and the Raiders went into halftime up 1-0.

Mathews held off Rappahannock for the entire second half with a good defense by Ricky Rutter, Sam Gale, Tim White and Scooter Ransone, and stellar offense from Jordan Bozza, Kevin Jenkins, Mark Wilson, Daniel Michinaux, Chandler Brown and Stuart Anderson who made key plays that kept the Raiders at bay.
