Devils beat Pointers to improve to 4-4

  

It wasn’t pretty, but in the end it went down in the books as another win for the Blue Devils.

The Mathews High School varsity football team improved to 4-4 on the season after defeating the winless West Point Pointers, 21-16, on Friday night at Ken Brown Field. Mathews had to rally after trailing, 16-14, to pull out the victory.

Mathews took an early 7-0 lead, with the scoring drive capped off with sophomore Alec Thompson’s short rushing touchdown. Mathews extended its lead to 14-0 and appeared poised to go into halftime with that lead when the Pointers scored with only a few ticks left on the clock to close the gap to 14-8.

West Point kept the momentum going in the third quarter, putting together a long drive that gave them a two-point lead. Mathews recaptured the lead and held on as the final Pointer drive stalled, allowing the Devils to run out the clock.
