Devils beat Panthers; fall to Raiders, Indians

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team dropped games to Rappahannock and Northumberland on Wednesday and Thursday, coming back on Friday to defeat Charles City to earn the Blue Devils’ first win of the season.

In last Wednesday’s matchup against Rappahannock, Mathews fought back and forth with the visiting Raiders, but struggled in the closing minutes to fall, 60-51. 

In the contest, the Blue Devils shot better from the charity stripe (62 percent) than their opponents (46 percent). The Devils’ leading scorer was Caleb Thomas with 23 points. Thomas also led the team in rebounds with an impressive 17 (five offensive, 12 defensive).

 

Next in terms of scoring was Landon Green with eight points, along with four steals and six assists. Christian Williams finished the night with seven points and five rebounds, followed by Justin Ashberry with six points, Braden Hunley with three, and Noah Lewis and Mark Smith with two each.
