Devils beat Chargers, fall to Pointers

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team split a pair of Tidewater District contests this past week, beating the visiting Middlesex Chargers last Thursday, 2-1, and falling Monday to West Point in a road game, 5-3.

Mathews won last Thursday’s game in overtime, with Chris Barnhardt slipping in the winning goal. Will Sease made it possible for the Devils to take it to overtime with the team’s only goal during regulation play.

As a team, Mathews had 18 shots on goal, led by Sease (eight), Barnhardt (four), Grant Avery (three), Glenn Musgrove (two) and Brandon LaPointe (one). Sease provided the assist on the overtime goal.

Carter Vrooman played an outstanding game in goal with 11 keeper saves, including four in the last 10 seconds due to a corner kick from Middlesex.

It was a different story on Monday as Mathews fell to the Pointers. Brad Joselyn, who filled in as a striker from his usual sweeper position, scored two of the Devils’ three goals. Musgrove made the other MHS score. Sease had seven shots on goal, with Ryan Morgan adding four and Avery, Barnhardt and Tyler Tillman picking up two apiece. Musgrove and Jacob Johnson each had one shot on goal.

The MHS alumni game will be held on Sunday, May 22. Tickets are $8, which covers the cost of the game and a cookout that will follow. Chicken quarters, sides and dessert will be served. Tickets are sold by all soccer players.
