Devils beat Chargers 3-1 in soccer

The Mathews High School soccer team picked up its first conference win, beating Middlesex last Wednesday, 3-1.

The Devils knew what to expect from the Chargers this time around and were able to shut down the Charger offense and work its defense. Kelly Nelson was able to make her way down the side of the field to make a beautiful cross to the inside, where Justin Jenkins headed the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Mason Kent scored the second goal after dribbling through the Charger defense all the way up the half and chipping it over the keeper’s head. P.J. Johnson scored the final goal with a rip to the back corner of the net for the final Mathews goal.

Despite the triumphant win over the Chargers, the Devils weren’t quite prepared for the second match of the season against the visiting King William Cavaliers on Monday.
