Devil golfers show steady improvement

The Mathews High School golf team competed in three matches during the week. While the team didn’t post a win, it has shown steady improvement, including a season-best performance on Tuesday in a match against Essex and Northumberland at the Hobbs Hole Golf Course in Tappahannock.

Last Thursday, the MHS golfers traveled to the Golden Eagle Golf Club to face off against Lancaster, Northumberland and New Kent. Low scorer was Rob Kliner of New Kent, with a round of 39. The Trojans won with a team score of 179.

The Mathews squad was led by Matt Jenkins, who shot a season best, 46, followed by Zach Dehoux with a 50, Chase Lewis with a 51 and Cole Huff with a 56. The Blue Devils finished fourth with a team score of 203.

Mathews’ next match was held on Monday, at Quinton Oaks Golf Course. The Blue Devils were joined by King William and Rappahannock high schools. Low scorer was Taylor Hubbard of King William, with a 36. Mathews was led by Huff, who shot a career best, 43. Also c...
