Devil golfers continue to show improvement

The Mathews High School golf team competed in a pair of matches during the past week. Although the Devils lost both, the team continues to get better with each outing.

“I am very pleased with the improvement our team has shown in the past several weeks,” said coach James Hutcheson. “Even the JV golfers have brought down their scores substantially as the season comes to a close.”

The golfers started off the week last Thursday at Northumberland’s home course, Indian Creek Golf Course. In the match against the host Indians and Rappahannock Raiders, Mathews came in third with a team score of 193. The Raiders won the match, edging out Northumberland, 182-184.

Mathews was led by Matt Jenkins, who shot a 44. Also contributing to the Devils’ team score were Zach Dehoux (46), Chase Lewis (49) and Cole Huff (54).
