Devil booters head into post-season

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team, after completing a 12-4 regular season, was scheduled to host the first game in the Conference 42 tournament yesterday against Cumberland. The winner is set to play on Friday for the title; Region 1A East tournament play begins Monday.

The Devils closed the season with a pair of away games—an 8-0 slaughter rule victory over Carver Academy last Wednesday and a 6-3 loss to Bruton on Friday.

In the varsity-only matchup last Wednesday, Mathews had little trouble putting away the Wolverines. Chandler Brown opened the scoring early for Mathews at the two-minute mark, the first of his two goals on the day. Carver was able to get one shot on goal after Brown’s second goal, but soon after, Daniel Michinaux would score a third goal for Mathews, putting the Devils up, 3-0, only 15 minutes into the contest. Ryan Crocker, Kevin Jenkins and Ricky Rutter all scored first-half goals to widen the lead to 6-0.
