Devil booters defeat West Point, Middlesex; jayvees drop two

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team picked up a pair of wins over Tidewater District foes last week, beating West Point and Middlesex by identical 4-3 margins.

West Point

West Point, which shut out the Devils, 2-0, earlier this season, came to Mathews last Wednesday confident it would score another easy win. The Pointers were in for a surprise.

Mathews started with a goal by Kevin Jenkins only two minutes into the contest, but the Pointers quickly retaliated, knotting the score at 1-1. West Point would take the lead at halftime, 2-1.

The Devils came out strong in the second half, with Stuart Anderson’s goal tying the game. Less than a minute afterwards, Jordan Bozza would give Mathews a 3-2 lead. West Point came back yet again, setting the stage for the winning goal as goalie Jacob Maggioncalda fed Anderson for his second goal of the game.
