Devil booters beat Indians, 4-1

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team struck early, setting the tempo that would carry the Devils to a 4-1 win last Wednesday against the home-standing Northumberland Indians.

Only 10 minutes into the contest, Tyler Jackson scored the first of his two goals, this one off an assist from Jordan Bozza. Jackson’s second goal came 22 minutes into the first half, giving the Devils a 2-0 edge heading into halftime.

The Indians came out strong in the second half, scoring a goal in the opening minutes. Northumberland continued its offensive pressure, but goalie Jacob Maggioncalda consistently blocked their attempts to score.

It was close to 15 minutes into the second half before Mathews would regain its footing. At 20 minutes into the half, Kevin Jenkins scored and soon after Bozza placed the nail in Northumberland’s coffin to put Mathews ahead, 4-1.   JV Devils
