Despite rain, and an accident, Gloucester’s parade goes on

A chilly rain and an accident didn’t stop the Gloucester Citizens’ Christmas and Holiday Parade on Saturday. Parade participants and a festive crowd of on-lookers umbrella’d up and carried on with good cheer in spite of the weather and the delay caused by the accident.

“The rain was a bummer,” said Denise Carter of the Gloucester Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, “but everybody had such a great attitude. There wasn’t a lot of grumbling; there really was a holiday spirit.”

Of the 83 units that signed up for the parade, only 23 cancelled, said Carter, including the band and some groups with small children and older people. And plenty of residents turned out to watch the parade, as well. Just before it started, Carter said she looked up the road toward the courthouse and saw “a sea of umbrellas.”

“It looked like a really good crowd,” she said. “It was cool.”
