Deltaville hosts Great Skiff Race, Fish Fry

The annual Great Skiff Race and Fish Fry will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park on Jackson Creek Road.

The busy day will culminate with a Groovin’ in the Park concert beginning at 5 p.m. The public is invited to all activities. Holly Point Market, located in the park, opens at 9 a.m.

The Great Skiff Race is a competition among families from around the country who have spent Family Boatbuilding Week, which is the week before the race, building 12’ or 14’ work skiffs designed by Deltaville boatbuilder John Wright.

The yearly event “encompasses our maritime mission,” said events director Bill Powell. He added that the workshop “teaches families historic woodworking skills, gathers families in the nature park for a week together, and preserves a workcraft design that has been the ‘light utility vehicle’ of Chesapeake Bay watermen throughout bay maritime history.
