Deltas fall in league championship

The Deltaville Deltas advanced to the championship game on Sunday of the Southern Virginia Baseball League for the second time in three years last weekend, but came up short in a classic pitchers’ duel.

The Deltas fell to the Newport News Cardinals, 2-0, in a lightning-fast contest in York County. It was over in two hours.

Deltas’ starting pitcher Jay Moore yielded just three hits over seven innings, but two of those hits came back-to-back in the fourth inning and resulted in the only runs allowed. Newport News starter Robbie Watkins went the distance for the Cardinals. The right-hander likewise scattered just three hits, while striking out seven.

Bryan Bierlein pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Deltaville. Cory Peel, Alexander Crittenden and Carter Biringer were the lone Deltas to find success at the plate, each going 1-for-3.
Moore and Watkins were not the only pitchers hurling gems over the weekend, however.
