Deltas fall in championship game

The Deltaville Deltas finished their most successful season since 2005 on Sunday, falling in a tightly contested Southern Virginia Adult Baseball League championship game against the Newport News Cardinals, 3-1.

The championship marked back-to-back titles for the Cardinals, who finished the season with an 18-3 record. The Deltas, playing for the championship for the first time since 2005 with the then Richmond-based Virginia Baseball League, finished their season with an 18-4 mark.

Deltaville reached the championship game by edging the VBA 61’s on Saturday night, 4-2.

The Deltas and Cardinals locked in a defensive battle in Sunday’s championship game, with a series of diving catches, close plays, and excellent pitching leading to two of the most potent offenses in the league only managing a combined 11 hits and 4 runs. However, a pair of timely hits and a Delta’s defensive error led the Cardinals to the title.
