Decision ‘16: Local voters pick Trump, Clinton in presidential primaries

Tuesday’s sunny skies and balmy weather brought out Republican voters in Gloucester and Mathews counties, but Democratic numbers were down locally.

With more than 25 percent of all registered voters in both Gloucester and Mathews voting Republican in Tuesday’s primary, Donald Trump was the clear Republican winner, taking 44 percent of the Republican vote in Gloucester and 43 percent in Mathews. Trump did much better locally than he did statewide. Across Virginia, he garnered 34.8 percent of the vote.

Only about 10 percent of registered voters in Gloucester and Mathews counties voted in the Democratic primary, and Hillary Clinton got the benefit of the overwhelming majority of those votes—59 percent in Gloucester and 63 percent in Mathews. That was pretty close to the statewide result, where Clinton earned 64.3 percent of the vote.
