Deadline for Mathews tax payments moved to June 30

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to extend the deadline for the payment of real estate taxes for the first half of 2011 from June 5 to June 30.

County administrator Steve Whiteway suggested the date change because of the reassessment. On Wednesday morning, Whiteway explained that normally the public hearing for adopting the budget can be held seven days after the budget is published, but during a reassessment year, if the equalized tax rate is increasing, there has to be a 30-day space between the public notice and the public hearing. That means tax bills can’t go out earlier than the end of May, said Whiteway, which would make a June 5 deadline unfair.

The board set its budget adoption meeting for 7:30 p.m. on May 16, one week after the May 9 public hearing on the budget, which will be held at 7 p.m. at Thomas Hunter Middle School.
