DAVID ERIC ZWERNER

David Eric Zwerner, 79, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His love of learning inspired many others, and he could intelligently discuss any topic.

David was born in Indianapolis, Indiana; he later moved to Gloucester, Virginia, where he lived for 53 years. After graduating in the class of 1955 from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, David went on to receive an undergraduate degree in 1959 from George Washington University as well as a Master’s Degree from the College of William and Mary. In 1982 David retired as a Captain in the United States Coast Guard Reserve and went on to work for the Virginia Institute of Marine Science until 2002.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Marguerite Zwerner; his son, Stephen E. Zwerner, and nephew, Daniel Fenno.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Zwerner of GloucesterPoint; two sons, Thomas L. Zwerner (Joan) and John D. Zwerner (Julie); grandchildren, Daniel Zwerner, Abigail Zwerner, Hannah Zwerner, and  Hunter Zwerner; stepgrandchildren, Josh White, Nick White, and Rachel Minner; brother, John S. Zwerner (Annette) of Arizona; John’s children, Debbie Bowman and Jeff Zwerner; their mother, Judy Baird; nieces, Susan Fenno (Troy) and Phyllis Fenno, and nephew, Charles Fenno (Mary).

 The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Vickie Hall and Karen Harvey, who lovingly assisted with David’s care.

A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Sven vanBaars was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Abingdon Episcopal Church.
