David Alan “Dave” Spaetzel of Gloucester, a beloved husband, brother, and friend, passed away on September 16, 2026 at the age of 65, following a period of declining health.
Born on September 21, 1960 in Gary, Indiana, Dave was the cherished son of the late John and Helen Spaetzel. He grew up in the Fox Hill area of Hampton, Virginia, where he developed a lifelong love for all things mechanical.
On May 31, 1986, Dave married the love of his life, Marie. Together, they moved to Gloucester, Virginia, where they built a life filled with love, friendship, and countless memories. Dave and Marie shared 40 beautiful years of marriage, marked by enduring love, devotion, and partnership.
After moving to Gloucester, Dave opened his business, 17 Machine, which he successfully owned and operated for 35 years. Through his work, Dave forged many loyal and lasting friendships and business relationships. He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand or share his extensive knowledge of his trades.
Dave was truly at his best when he had the opportunity to teach or mentor others. Sharing his skills and knowledge was one of the things he enjoyed most, and those fortunate enough to learn from him will carry a part of his legacy forward.
Away from work, Dave enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. He treasured the time spent gathered with the people he cared about and especially valued his time on the water, fishing with his friend Robert.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Marie; his siblings, Edwin Spaetzel, Michael (Virginia) Spaetzel, and Suzy (Andrew) Soley; his nieces, Heather and Elizabeth, and his nephews, John, Michael, Matthew, Zachary, and Connor.
Dave also leaves behind Matthew West and his family, who held a very special place in his heart. Matthew was like a son to Dave, and the bond they shared was one of love, friendship, and family.
Also missing Dave are his beloved four-legged companions, George and Pipper, his dogs, and Mr. Cuddles, his cat, who brought him companionship, comfort, and plenty of joy.
He also leaves behind many cherished family members, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his friendship, generosity, and willingness to share his knowledge.
A Celebration of Life honoring Dave will be held on October 17, 2026 at noon at the Ware River Yacht Club, 5992 Ware Point Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
