Darlene Coates Garnand, 74, of Hayes, died at her home May 27, 2017.

Darlene was born to the late Ross Sr. and Ruby Coates on Feb. 27, 1943. Her smiling face could be seen at Farm Fresh Supermarket for more than 30 years.

Darlene was a devoted lover of animals, particularly concerned over the welfare of dogs and cats. She enjoyed watching her soap operas. Darlene was the most caring and kind person to everyone she met and worked tirelessly in her home taking care of her family. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Roy Evans Garnand Jr.; son, Roy Evans “Butch” Garnand III; son-in-law, David Sperlein, and brother, Ross Coates Jr.

She is survived by daughters, Susan Sperlein and Sandra Keplinger (Doug); sister, Elaine C. Stubblefield; brother, James E. Coates (Julie); grandchildren, Scott Spencer and Hailey Spencer; great-grandchild, Peyton Spencer, and special friends, Mark, Sharon and Aahron King.

Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bill West was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends Monday, May 29, 2017, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In memory of Darlene the family desires contributions be given to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061.

The family wishes to thank Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, Christy West and Samantha White for the loving care given to Darlene during her illness.
