Cyclist dies in Rt. 17 accident in York County

The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal bicycle crash that occurred at 8:25 p.m. Monday in York County.

A 2000 Ford Expedition was heading southbound on Route 17. The Expedition had a green light at the intersection with Washington Square Drive and was proceeding through the intersection when it encountered a bicyclist. The Expedition was unable to avoid striking the bicycle, a VSP release stated.

The cyclist, Leroy F. Chatham Jr., 60, of Yorktown, was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he later died of his injuries. He was dressed in dark, non-reflective clothing.

The driver of the Expedition, a 53-year-old Newport News man, remained on scene of the crash. Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be contributing factors.

The crash remains under investigation.
