Beginning tonight, the Mathews VA250 Committee and The Court House Players will present six performances of the beloved Judy Ward musical, “Crickets on a Hill.” Shows will be tonight and tomorrow, July 2 and 3, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, July 5, at 3 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, July 19, at 3 p.m. All performances will be in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, available online at courthouseplayers.org/crickets-2026 and at the door. This will be the fourth production of the show since it was written and first performed in 1976 during the U.S. Bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. All across the nation that year, communities were coming up with ways to celebrate the birth of the new nation, and in Mathews, Judy Ward, a young singer/songwriter, had an idea about how her community could join in the fun.
