Crews preparing for Rt. 198 bridge project

The contractor for the bridge superstructure replacement on Route 198 over Harpers Creek in upper Gloucester County has started to mobilize in the work zone.

Kelly Hannon, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said Sept. 2 that Bryant Contracting, Inc., of Toano was awarded the $1.3 million contract for the project and motorists should notice more work underway in that area during the next few weeks.

Early stages of the work, Hannon said, include staging equipment and supplies, as well as posting work zone signs.

The bridge is currently “structurally deficient,” Hannon said. No major reconstruction has been performed on this bridge since it was built in 1941, she said. The bridge is 43 feet long and almost 26 feet wide.

“There will be one-way traffic crossing the bridge for approximately eight months, from September-April,” she said, with traffic alternating from one lane to the other midway through the project.
