Crews back on the water

Members of the Mathews High School crew and Mobjack Rowing Association competed in their first race of the spring season Saturday at the Atlantic Yacht Basin in Chesapeake.

On the Albemarle Chesapeake Canal, Great Bridge High School crew hosted a scrimmage with MHS, MRA, Hickory, Grassfield and Williamsburg Boat Club. A normal junior rowing course consists of six lanes, but the narrow inland waterway required an unusual two-lane race of either 1,000 or 2,000 meters.

The first race began with Mobjack rowers Mandy Moran and Samantha Fank competing in the women’s double in a 1,000-meter race against Great Bridge, winning by open water. Mobjack rowers Aileigh Daniel, Savannah Hartlove, Macy Johnson and Lillian Copeland joined with Great Bridge novices to row the 1,000-meter women’s novice eight event against Williamsburg, also winning by open water.

Daniel, Hartlove, Johnson, Copeland and coxswain Lily Baucom also competed in the women’s novice four 1,000-meter race.
