Courthouse facelift

Upgrades to Mathews County’s historic courthouse are expected to be completed by the end of November. General contractor Michael Swiderski, in foreground, of Storybound Woodworks in Gloucester, has made the floor one level where a judge’s bench and jurors’ box were once elevated above the meeting and audience areas. This will create room for a new U-shaped meeting table now under construction. John Walker, leaning over in the background, owner of JSL Walker Electric of Gloucester, and his assistant, Steven Hunsberger, were in the process last week of installing new electrical circuits for computer data lines, video monitors, microphones and speakers in the meeting table. There will also be video monitors and speakers suspended from the ceiling. The upgrades are not part of a renovation project, said county administrator Mindy Moran. Rather, they are intended to enhance communication between officials and the public during meetings. Photo by Sherry Hamilton
