Courthouse Community Orchestra to present concert at MHS

The Courthouse Community Orchestra will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School to commemorate the nation’s 249 years since the May 15 creation of Virginia’s Declaration of Independence.
The concert is sponsored by the Mathews VA250 Committee, the Mathews Museum, and the Mathews County Historical Society. It is free and open to the public.
The Courthouse Community Orchestra, directed by USAF Staff Sgt. Jarrett Kocan, will entertain with a cross section of recognizable melodies ranging from Broadway plays such as Wicked, to Swan Lake to David Bowie.
The concert, “Let’s Dance! Music Americans Know and Love,” is part of a series of activities which will occur as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026.
The Mathews VA250 Committee is part of a statewide commemoration effort preparing for this anniversary. The local committee, chaired by Fred Lyon, is planning a series of outreach events, a release said.
