Court Green dig

Archaeologists Jackson Stubbs, right, and Dr. David Brown of DATA Investigations LLC are excavating test units to evaluate the archaeological resources within the Mathews Court Green. The project, funded by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and done in collaboration with Mathews County, will help evaluate portions of an Indigenous site that predates the town of Westville (predecessor of Mathews Court House) and also the archaeological resources associated with the center of Mathews County government and administration for more than two centuries. Excavations will continue until early December, Brown said.
