County takes energy-saving steps at beach, pier

Gloucester County has taken steps in recent months to improve the energy efficiency at its Gloucester Point public facilities.

A crew from Gloucester’s Department of Buildings and Grounds recently installed low-flow toilets and urinals at the Beach House, the county building at the Gloucester Point Beach which houses restrooms and a concession stand, according to the department’s director, Wes McIntyre.

These units require less water to flush, but should work just as well as the standard toilets, McIntyre said.

Last fall, a crew replaced the incandescent light bulbs on the county-maintained Gloucester Point Pier with LED bulbs. These are long-lasting, more durable and require less energy, he said. In recent weeks, crews have been removing some of the light poles on the pier because the LED bulbs have such a good spread of light that all of the light poles aren’t needed there any longer.
