County removes flags from monument, in talks with SCV

Gloucester County staff members are working with members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans on an agreement for maintaining the space around the Confederate Monument located inside the colonial court circle.

The potential agreement comes after a dispute between the county and a local SCV chapter on whether the chapter had the right to place Confederate flags around the monument.

Joey Taylor, commander of SCV Lane Armistead Camp #1772, Mathews, said one of its members who happens to be a retired police officer, placed several Confederate flags around the monument in Gloucester on Sunday, Aug. 6. By Tuesday, Aug. 8, Taylor drove by and noticed the flags were missing and placed two more flags on the site.

The next day, Taylor said the flags were missing again. So, he stopped to put two more flags up. “This time, I was approached by a gentleman who told me I could not put the flags there,” Taylor said. He identified the gentleman’s last name as “Snowdon.” ...
