County moves ahead with building pier at Auburn Landing

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors is moving ahead with building a pier at Auburn Landing on the North River. The board voted to authorize construction at its Dec. 15 meeting.

Supervisor Charles Ingram negotiated a contract on behalf of the county with local contractor Joe Perdue to build the pier under the county’s small purchase policy.

While Ingram had received a quote from Perdue for a 5’x100’ pier for $14,250, he said that Perdue had expressed his willingness to add another 50 feet to the pier for an additional $4,000.

Supervisor Janine Burns suggested that a 150-foot pier at the site would be better because of how shallow the water is there. She said it would make the pier more usable over the long term. Burns added that the price was excellent and that Perdue has an outstanding reputation.

Ingram moved to approve the project with a 150-foot pier, and the board unanimously supported his motion. Permits will be required for the project.
