County employees still covering codes compliance duties

Gloucester Administrator Brenda Garton said an interim plan to cover the county’s codes compliance duties—a procedure in place since last summer—has found all participants "doing a very fine job."

However, Garton said she is not certain if the former codes compliance director position will be filled as the job was previously defined or if the position might be modified with new duties. No timeframe has been set for that decision, she said. Until that decision is made, the county is not moving forward with the hiring process.

The temporary arrangement is placing "a lot of burden" on several staff members, Garton said, and she doesn’t expect to leave the present codes compliance coverage as a permanent plan.

After former codes compliance director Ron Peaks resigned last summer, Garton announced that codes compliance duties would be filled in a multi-step fashion:
