County budget input meeting Tuesday

Mathews residents who have suggestions about items that should be included in the county’s 2018-2019 budget may attend Tuesday night’s board of supervisors’ budget public input meeting, starting at 7 o’clock in the historic courthouse.

Mathews County Administrator Mindy Conner explained to supervisors during the January board meeting that having a public meeting early in the budget process is important because by the time the public hearing is held, it’s often too late to make significant changes to the budget.

Each year, the suggested budget and associated tax rates are set prior to the budget public hearing, which is generally held in April. 

Last year, a large number of residents appeared at the April public hearing to express their support for increased funding for the school system. However, making significant changes would have required further meetings and would have delayed the budget process.
