Cornhole tourney, jambalaya cook-off in Reedville Oct. 4

A cornhole tournament and a cook-off featuring a spicy dish could be just about the perfect combination to kick off autumn.

The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum will sponsor its second annual tournament and cook-off from noon to about 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the museum, 504 Main Street.

The first event last fall drew eight teams of cornhole players and 10 pots of gumbo, said Teresa Coyne, the museum’s office manager and an organizer of the event both years. This year, the cook-off competition/tasting features jambalaya.

There are a few changes for the tournament this year, said Tim Layte, also a second-year organizer, who has helped with big charity tournaments in his hometown of Baltimore.

Last year, teams or individuals could enter. This year, only individual entries are accepted, and teams will be set up randomly. This will help even the playing field between players who compete in leagues and more casual players, Layte said.

The tourney will be on the museum’s lawn. Official American Cornhole Association rules will apply. Players can bring their boards but only the museum’s bags will be used.

Cornhole tournament entry fee is $20 per person in advance or $25 at the gate. Each entrant receives a free beer token. Admission to watch is free.

For the jambalaya cook-off, chefs are asked to bring their dish in a crock pot to keep the dish at a safe temperature.

There is no fee to enter the contest. It will cost $10 for a tasting ticket that can be used to vote for the favorite.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three scorers in the cornhole tournament and to the top three jambalaya winners as chosen by tasters.

The afternoon also will feature DJ Hawt Sauce from Colonial Beach, a beer and wine tent, food by the museum grill masters for sale, a 50/50 raffle and more.

The organizers have big plans for cornhole, hoping to start a league in Reedville for regular play and tourneys year-round.
