Construction of rowing/event center underway

Construction has begun on the William and Catharine Owens Waters Edge Center at Williams Wharf in Mathews.

On Monday, Orion Marine Group, headquartered in Houston, Texas, but with offices in Chesapeake, was installing the 30- to 50-foot concrete pilings that will eventually support the rowing and event center. Once completed, the boathouse will be the home of Mobjack Rowing and the Mathews High School rowing team.

Orion won the bid to construct a floating dock, a 6’ wide fishing pier with a 10’ x 100’ T-head, and a new bulkhead along the shoreline in addition to driving the pilings for the 16,000-square-foot rowing/event center, said Tim Ulsaker, vice president of the Mathews Land Conservancy. The conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, owns Williams Wharf. Ulsaker is the founder and coach of the MHS crew program and Mobjack Rowing, and said the project has been his dream for the past 30 years.
