Confederate monument to be rededicated

The Mathews County Committee for the Civil War Sesquicentennial, the Mathews County Historical Society, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans will jointly sponsor a rededication of Mathews County’s Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the monument, which is located at the corner of Court and Church streets in Mathews Court House. Participating in the program will be the Mathews High School Band, American Legion Post 83, singer Lynda Smith Greve and several speakers, followed by a wreath laying and a musket volley by Civil War reenactors. The program is open to the public free of charge.

Mathews County descendants of Civil War veterans, for whom the monument was erected, are encouraged to attend. No parking will be allowed on Court Street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. because of the ceremony.
