A concert to benefit the Judy Ward Scholarship Fund for Mathews High School seniors will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, 2011 Old Ferry Road, Gwynn.
Local singers and musicians, including Michele Thacker, Hunter Owens, Autumn Jenkins, and others, will perform songs in a variety of genres at this annual event. Refreshments will be served afterward in the fellowship hall. There is no charge to attend, but donations to support the scholarship are greatly appreciated, according to a press release from scholarship chairman Lori Oliver.
The Judy G. Ward Scholarship was endowed to continue a legacy in her honor and to be an enduring gift to make continuing education more accessible to rising college students from Mathews County, said the release.
Ward was born and raised on Gwynn’s Island and was “a truly gifted person,” said Oliver. She was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter who performed to appreciative audiences throughout the region, as well as a dispatcher for Mathews Sheriff’s Office and a dedicated member of Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad. She died in 2010 at age 65.
Ward’s talent was “only eclipsed by her humility and love for God and others,” said Oliver.
All Mathews High School students are encouraged to submit an essay and application for the scholarship at the high school’s guidance office.
