Concerns over animal control response aired at meeting

An incident at Hayes regarding an erratically acting fox garnered the attention of Gloucester’s governing body Tuesday night.

Powhatan Chimney resident Shannon Renfro addressed the county’s board of supervisors during its meeting in the colonial courthouse about an incident in mid-August where her dog was cornered in the backyard of her home by a fox. She said that she was concerned about the lack of response from authorities after she reported the incident. 

According to Renfro, her husband was able to rescue the family dog and after doing so, tried to make motions to force the fox to leave the property. “The fox didn’t respond to any movement, which is an indication it was rabid,” Renfro said.

Finally, she said her husband was able to detain the fox in a dog crate and, because it was midnight, decided to wait until the next morning to contact authorities. “We called animal control at 8 a.m. and they informed us that they no longer handle wi...
